Raipur:Chronic pain has a significant impact on the quality of life and physical functioning of patients. Patients suffering with prolonged chronic pain can develop depression, hypertension, malnutrition and even suicidal tendencies. WHO has included pain relief as basic fundamental right of human beings. The instances of unbearable chronic pain have been on the rise for many years in India. Dr Pankaj Omar, Head of ICU, Shree Narayana Hospital says “the awareness levels on many types of chronic pains and its treatment options are very low among the masses in our country. Advancement in interventional pain Management has made it easy to manage chronic and severe pain effectively and permanently without side effects& without the need of hospitalization. Patients are not aware of new simple medical techniques like Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) that can largely control their pain”. RFA (Radio Frequency Ablation) can be done on all patients irrespective of their age, physical condition, diabetes, hypertension or cardiac disease. These are day care procedures and patient can go back home within 2 to 3 hours after the procedure. RFA is known to have controlled chronic pains in most commonly suffered areas such as low back, shoulder, hip, neck and other points depending upon the cause of pain. Chronic low back pain is very common in our country due to sedentary lifestyles and at times it leads to debilitating pain which is not controlled by regular resources like oral medication, physiotherapy or alternate medicines and yoga etc. Even intolerable pain out of previous spine operation (Failed back syndrome) can be controlled using RFA. Like back pain neck pain and frozen shoulder are also severe painful conditions and RFA has made it very easy to control such pains. The procedure desensitizes painful nerves and their rhizolysis is done with minimally invasive treatment after identifying them with the advanced Electronic devices, adds Dr Pankaj Omar RFA is also used in some very inimitable conditions such as Trigeminal Neuralgia (Suicidal Disease), a neuropathic pain condition affecting the face, characterized by sharp, shooting, ‘electric shock-like’ pain sensation usually on one side of the face. In this condition routine daily activity such as brushing the teeth, applying facial cosmetics, encountering a breeze, talking, or eating, may trigger intolerable pain.Through RF ablation within a few hours patient gets complete relief from Trigeminal Neuralgia pain. Pain relief may last for 2 to 3 hours years. After RF patient may not require any medicine for years together. Another area where RFA is used is Cancer related pains. Through RFA cancer pain can be effectively controlled with reasonable cost, this procedure can also be performed in physically unfit patients. Through various procedures in spinal cord in a day care facility cancer pain is relieved with minimally invasive technique.Migraine, cervical spine injury and Brain strokes pains cause severe burning pain in the paralyzed areas of the body which is very distressing and difficult to control. Earlier, it was not possible to reduce these pains but now with the availability of RFA these pains can be reduced within hours. Dr Pankaj Omar concludes “RFA has given human beings, a chance to lead a pain free life with minimum or nil medicinal need. It doesn’t use steroid so avoids inherited side effects of steroids in already compromised patient. Being without any side effect in experienced hands, this technique of pain management is rapidly gaining popularity and acceptance in the West. FDA (USA) & NHS (UK) have already included it in their national health programs. We also need awareness about this modality to provide maximum pain relief to Indian population as well.”
